Dont be fooled into thinking this is an academic or unimportant question. Credibility is positively correlated to success in every sphere of life. If you cant define credibility or identify its elements, you cant take advantage of opportunities to boost your credibility and your success.

Identifying the elements that make up credibility is important because a high score on one or two elements does not guarantee a high credibility rating. Credibility Element #1: Integrity

A key element of credibility involves transparency, trustworthiness, and moral predictability. We feel good about people who embody the phrase, what you see is what you get.

Dont underestimate the importance of honesty and integrity in the workplace. People who have a track record of being objective and truthful are perceived as more credible than those who dont. Companies who open their books to union representatives are more credible than those who do not. Conclusions based on scientific or systematic inquiry are credible conclusions.

- Invest time in clarifying your values and examining your behavior in light of them

- Build a reputation for truthful and ethical behavior

Credibility Element #2: Competence

Experts enjoy a much higher degree of credibility than those who lack expertise. We trust experts to understand the scope of an issue or project, to know the right questions to ask, and to know how to find the answers to those questions.

Expertise comes from a blend of a persons education and experience. People with doctoral degrees in a field obviously have more credibility than those who lack a degree. At the same time, people who have come up through the ranks or have worked in diverse jobs within an industry are considered to be experts. These folks usually have more perceived expertise than new college graduates.

Expertise turns into competence when it is put to the test. A person earns her credibility by succeeding at assignments and projects over time. A track record of successfully applying knowledge and a willingness to continue learning increases credibility.

- Request high-visibility projects to establish a track record

Credibility Element #3: Sound Judgment

As a good friend can be counted on to listen well and encourage you to make wise decisions, a credible person can be counted on to analyze complex situations, ask intelligent questions, and make good decisions. A person with sound judgment usually has both cognitive and intuitive gifts. This person takes a big-picture rather than a myopic view and a long-term rather than a short-term perspective.

A savvy CEO, for example, might have a track record of acquiring businesses or creating products just ahead of demand. This person has a track record of correctly anticipating future trends and preparing for them.

To boost your credibility on this element, take the following actions:

- Ask others for input into your decisionsespecially regarding the impact on them

- Avoid snap judgments

- Stay current on the trends within your industry and company

Credibility Element #4: Relationally Sensitive

People with high credibility know how to ask questions about our values and interests, to listen intently and with empathy, and to pull people together. These are the people with high emotional intelligence to balance the arrogance that sometimes comes with expertise.

Jay Conger, an expert on persuasion, puts it this way:

“On the relationship side, people with high credibility have demonstratedagain, usually over timethat they can be trusted to listen and to work in the best interests of others. They have also consistently shown strong emotional character and integrity; that is, they are not known for mood extremes or inconsistent performance.”

A person develops a track record in relationships in the same way he develops a track record in performance. If he becomes known for building commitment and cooperation, for being level-headed and fair, everyone will want him on their team.

To boost your credibility on this element, take the following actions:

- Demonstrate willingness to learn from others and from your own mistakes

- Demonstrate concern for others values, goals, and objectives

- Take time to understand anothers point of view before refuting or rejecting it

Credibility Element #5: Likable

Research studies consistently reveal that people respond positively to others whom they like. They trust them, they cooperate with them, they approve their proposals, and they buy from them. Mitch Anthony, author of Selling with Emotional Intelligence, puts it succinctly, Likability is as important as ability.

Emotional intelligence guru, Daniel Goleman, and co-authors Boyatzis and McKee, remind us of the importance of optimism and a lighthearted perspective in the workplace, asserting that leaders who have the ability to express enthusiasm and upbeat emotions attract other people.

Further, the authors remind us that a smile (friendliness) is contagious, drawing others to smile in response. A smile, however, can be faked. Laughter is too complex for faking, and, at a deep, non-verbal level, people know this. Accordingly, we trust (assign credibility to) people who laugh with us.

- Communicate optimistically by describing challenges rather than problems

- Go out of your way to be friendly, even if you arent an extravert

Credibility is a Package Deal

No single element described here can guarantee high perceived credibility. After all, an expert without integrity might be a dictator. A likable person who lacks judgment will make stupid decisions.

People assign you a degree of credibility based on how they rate you on the interplay between the elements of credibility: integrity, expertise, sound judgment, relationship sensitivity, and likability. Perceived credibility is a package deal.

Understanding the elements of credibility provides you with opportunities to boost your perceived credibility and your success. Being a practicing Christian myself, there are very few things in Yoga that conflict with Christianity. Some critics argue that Yoga and Christianity cannot co-exist, and yet we know that Yoga is not a religion.

However, that depends on your opinion. Recently, I was reading about someone who claims Kundalini is new age witchcraft.
Sorry to say, another person recently stated, Good Christians should avoid the devils exercise, in reference to Yoga.

Are the Salem witch trials still so close to our hearts? These claims are interesting because ministers and priests have been practicing meditation for centuries, without any complaints.

I suppose, if someone devoted enough time to meditating on bad thoughts, meditation would be a bad experience.

To be honest, it depends upon what you meditate about; and in truth, within some schools of Yoga, Hinduism, or Buddhism is taught. For me, this has always been a conflict, as I love Yoga, but have no desire to change my faith.

The many teachings of Yoga and meditation, are non-sectarian. Now, if Yoga were a religion, which would it be? The principles of Yoga are universal.

The Yamas and Niyamas are similar, in principle, to the Ten Commandments, but as a Christian you have the right to pick and choose what you want from Yoga. You also have the right to avoid sectarian ashrams.

Yoga practice, and meditation, give many Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and Moslems, a closer connection to God, but there will always be someone who feels tempted to change their faith.

Lets be honest, the people who worry about a sudden change of faith are, for the most part, rooted in two distinct camps of thought.

1. Someone who is on the fence about their own religion and not quite sure where they really stand.

2. Severe intolerance of any idea that is new or might result in opening the mind.

Lets stop the intolerance now. When you are driving in your car, waiting in line, or come face-to-face with someone who is different from you, please set an example for your children and give the other person a break.

If you are in financial difficulty, not knowing how to meet your debt commitments, you would need the advice of a credit counselor. You would need to find the various information regarding such an agency, before you can select one for the services that you need. If you are deep into financial crisis, being too much in debt, a credit counselor might advice you to enroll in a Debt Management Plan (DMP). A DMP alone is not termed as credit counseling, and the plan is not for all. A certified credit counselor should have spent a considerable time with you discussing and analyzing your problem, and only after that you may consider signing on a DMP. Even with an appropriate DMP, a reputable credit counseling agency should be helping you with the preparation of your budget and teaching you how to manage money.

DMP would require you to deposit money each month with the credit counseling agency, and the agency in turn will pay your unsecured debts from the money that you deposit. These may be your credit card bills, student loans, and medical bills, a schedule of which has been drawn up by your credit counselor. There could be concessions made by your creditors in the form of lowering of interest rates, waiving off certain fees, etc. You need to check these with your creditors making sure that they would offer you concessions as have been mentioned by the credit counselor. To achieve a successful result through a DMP, you would be required to make the timely monthly deposits, as mentioned, and this could take up to 48 months or longer to complete. To find out more about the completion of your DMP, you may ask your credit counselor regarding the time that it would require for the plan to complete. During the time the DMP is under operation, you may have to agree in not having or using any additional credit.

In order to determine whether DMP is right for you, you should consider the following:

You should ask your credit counselor if a DMP is the only option that could be provided to you. You would want to find out if your credit counselor would be providing you with on-going budgeting advice, whether you enroll in a DMP or not. A reputable credit counseling agency would provide you with such services even if you opt for DMP. If your credit counseling agency does not offer you the service for on-going budgeting advice, even after your enrollment in DMP, you better look for another agency which would.

1. You need to find out the detailed operation of your DMP. You are needed to make sure that, on signing the DMP, and depositing your money with your credit counselor, your debts are paid off in time, as have been arranged with your creditors. You should sign on such a DMP that would allow payments to be made to your creditors before the due dates or during the correct billing cycle.

2. You should not sign a DMP if you cannot afford the payment. Before signing the DMP, you would need to find out as to how your payments would be determined. This would tell you if you can afford the DMP drawn up for you.

3. You should know if you can have access to the status report of your account, and whether you could get on to your account details online, or by phone. It is necessary that you get all updated account information regularly from the credit counseling agency before you sign any DMP.

4. You would need to know if your credit counseling agency would get your creditors to lower their interest rates or waive any fees that have been charged to your accounts. If the agency says yes, you would need to confirm this out from your creditors, and also find out the time you are required to be on the plan before you start to get the benefits.

5. It is important to find out which bills are included in the DMP as otherwise the bills left out would have to be paid by you.

6. There are some credit counseling firms who would need you to make payments before they accept your DMP. You will need to confirm this with your credit counselor organisation. If this is what your counselor firm requires from you, call up your creditors to verify this information before you pay anything to your credit counseling firm.

7. Beware, some of the credit counseling firms would tell you that, by enrolling into a DMP, the negative aspects in your credit history can be removed. This can never be done. The negative report in your credit history usually stays up to 7 years.

Debt management plan is for someone who has a financial crisis in hand, with several debt problems which have become very difficult to be met with. DMP is not something which may be entered into by everyone. More-over, you would need to have a reputed credit counselor in order to solve your financial problems, since DMP is not a part of credit counseling. Even if you sign a DMP, your credit counselor is under the obligation to provide you with the other services, such as, preparing a budget for you and provide you advices on how to manage your finance.
