Practicing Hatha Yoga: The Gateway to Happiness

Non-judgment is a universal principle that exists in Yoga and many religions. Judgment of noise, surroundings, smells, and sensations is a common distraction during Yoga meditation.

In Yoga, the mind is often compared to a monkey because of distraction, but judgment is different. When we judge, the mind classifies and categorizes everything, but the system of organization can be flawed if the mind is not tolerant, loving, and respectful of others.

Judging others is a prison. Yoga teaches us to avoid judgment of others. Many of us judge ourselves, and other people, too harshly. Do not expect others to fit into a template of what you consider to be ideal or moral.

Skin color, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, gender, age, or choice of a favorite ice cream flavor, are not significant reasons for us to judge each other. When your mind begins to judge others, hold your tongue, and be mindful.

Think carefully before taking action and purge your mind of negative thoughts. When we speak hateful words, we can apologize, but we cannot strike them from the record.

Do not turn your back on a person in need. If you do, even once, you will always regret it. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to help someone who needs you.

You cannot wait for success, giving, and happiness to come to you. The Yoga practitioner, who finds happiness - takes action, helps others, seizes the moment, and moves forward with optimism.

Many Yoga teachers speak of living in the moment, but many of us have past regrets. None of us can afford to waste time with negative thought.

If you find yourself regretting the past, learn from the experience, and move forward with newfound optimism. If you are in negative surroundings, you must make a concerted effort to change.

We must accept, what we cannot change, but we are in control of our present and the future. We have no control over natural disasters and the economy, but through Yoga practice, we can learn to appreciate our surroundings.

Each choice, we make, has a cumulative effect on our health and the lives of those around us. If we are content with our family, friends, and co-workers, we contribute to their happiness.

In turn, happiness and good health comes full circle and returns to us. Hatha Yoga, and all forms of Yoga, are for the health maintenance of mind, body, and spirit. When we take positive action, on a daily basis, through loving kindness, mindfulness, and optimism, we practice Yoga and open the Gateway to Happiness.

The Purpose of Yoga - Creating Happiness From Within
The ancient Yogis created a science of breathing, which we know as Pranayama, but very often new Yoga students do not see the higher value in this practice. The new Hatha Yoga student may only see a value in the physical Yoga postures. Therefore, it is up to Yoga teachers to guide their students toward happiness with the aid of Pranayama. The body...

Yoga Visualization for Empowerment - Good Luck and Positive Energy

Whenever I mention Yoga and positive energy, someone will say or think, Easy for you to say. This is usually followed by, My life has been tough. Sorry to say, many people have struggled in life, and I did not come from a wealthy family.

Many people on this earth struggle against disease, hunger, and poverty. Even in the United States, there is obvious poverty. All I have to do is look out my office window, and I can see at least one homeless person.

Everyday, I talk to a few of them on my way to and from our wellness center. In fact, many local businesses, including mine, support local soup kitchens. Our local community does have groups, which take action, but the problem has only gotten worse. Many manufacturing jobs have left New England. The homeless do not seem to be counted as unemployed.

In fact, some political statisticians count a person, working three minimum wage jobs, as three working people. No wonder we have such a great unemployment rate. No one dares whisper the word recession.

Life is a picture we paint with our eyes. Some people cannot help but think the worst. It may have been ideas of deserved poverty, their environment, or circumstances beyond their control, but they gave up on opportunity.

If one of us wants to make a change, we can start today, but the old programming must be tossed aside. Nobody, anywhere on this earth, deserves to suffer from disease, hunger, and poverty. Never think that you deserve less, because somebody told you so. Look at life on the bright side and look for ethical opportunities everyday.

Universal Laws of Yoga - Part 2

Here are some habits to practice on your journey toward self-perfection. Always remember that you may make some mistakes along the way.

Cultivate love through acts of kindness toward family, friends, and associates. Smile at others and put your best foot forward. This alone will open many doors in life and make your journey a pleasant one.

Take time for self analysis by observing your past, future, and present. Visualize what you can change and learn from what you cannot. Meditate, pray, and practice your breathing (Pranayama).

Selfless service for the common good is rewarding for the inner and outer self. You do not have to join a group to help others, but a group will have more ability to help than a single person. Either way, helping others will make you a better person.

Give to charity and share with others when ever it is possible. Giving to others, especially those in need is a universal law. When it is possible to help another person, we should all help.

Forgive others for their wrong doings and let go of the past. Do this for yourself and you will feel a great burden, lifted from you. Carrying a grudge and frowning all day, takes too much positive energy out of you, so leave bad feelings behind.

The following are some habits to avoid. Avoid practicing Yoga for material gain or to acquire psychic powers. Anything of value should be used to help those you can. There is nothing wrong with earning a living or bettering yourself, but you should always help anyone you can.

As a Yoga practitioner, you are an ambassador of Yoga. An air of superiority should be avoided by all Yogis and Yoginis. This is seen as arrogance, and arrogance is only needed to bolster the ego. Therefore, be a diplomat, when speaking in terms of Yogic philosophy or vegetarianism.

Remember to practice Yoga as a lifestyle. Yoga is not just practiced in the ashram, in the mountains, on the beach, or behind the exclusive walls of a particular Yoga studio. Yoga can be practiced with acts of kindness, devotion to God, or in a physical practice at your own home.

Give your family, friends, and work your best efforts. Practicing Yoga is part of your life, but you should never abandon your obligations for Yoga. It is much healthier to live a full life and enjoy your family, friends, and work along the way.

We can take the right actions by practicing the following: Meditate daily and take action to focus your thinking, when your mind becomes restless. Remember that Yoga can be practiced anytime because of its mental, spiritual, and physical components.

Karma Yoga - The Art of Living

The ancient book of Gita, which is the treatise on the living has led a great stress on the karma. Karma is defined as the action and its fruits. Ancient Hindu saints have believed that a mans life is the direct result of his karma. Good thoughts, words and deeds lead to good and happy life while bad thoughts, words and deeds lead a person to disaster. This has been postulated in the 18th century by Isaac Newton, who gave his law as For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The branch of yoga that deals with karma is called as the karma yoga. Usually you are bound by the cravings and desires associated with your act but you can free yourself by doing the act but dissociating yourself from its consequences. This is the basic concept behind karma yoga and the person who follows this path is known as karma yogi. His behaviour is of indifference and while the world may think he is not interested, in reality he has mastered his desires and has developed awareness of the real significance of the events that occur around him.

This yoga involves doing your duty without any reservations but is free of the cravings of the results that are obtained from the act. This attitude is difficult to acquire because we are taught to hanker after the fruits of the labour and any failure to obtain the desired results leads you to frustration and negative thinking. Also, constant attachment to the results leads you to stress, competition and aggressiveness. This has led to increased incidences of stress, diabetes, depression, heart ailments and suicides and has led many youngsters to use drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. Hence following the teaching of Krishna in Gita, wherein he advises Arjun: You are entitled to an action but not its fruits will lead you to a happy and stress free life.

A karma yogi realizes this and hence he follows the path of detachment. But this does not make him dull or inefficient. On the contrary, he channelizes his entire energy into the tasks at hand with complete vigour as his energy is not dissipated and gives it a best shot. Hence the results of his actions are the best and he gets good fruits. He does not run after pleasure but pleasure follows him. This makes him a pleasant person to be around and thus enjoys success in his life.

Kevin Pederson is the webmaster of Yogawiz, that provides information on Yoga and Karma. Karma Yoga is another powerful yoga, where the action is done without expectation of fruits which leads to greater success and happiness in ones life.

Intuition Through Yoga

The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology defines Intuition as under:
Intuition: A mode of understanding or knowing characterized as direct and immediate and occurring without conscious thought or judgment. There are two distinct connotations which often accompany this term: a) that the process is unmediated and somehow mystical; b) that it is a response to subtle cues and relationships apprehended implicitly, unconsciously.
When you misplace an item, despite thinking sequentially through all the things you did earlier, you cant remember where it is. But in the evening when you are relaxing suddenly you remember that the missed item is in your table drawer. Where did this flash of insight come from? It was generated by your right brain, using data supplied by your left.

The best known example of a scientist who intuitively perceived a theory is Albert Einstein. Explaining how Einstein perceived the idea, Peter Russell explains in his book, The Brain Book: Einstein is a logical thinker. Yet his ideas initially came to him as pictures and images, and subsequently he put them into words and mathematical symbols. The theory was born when Einstein was lying on a grassy hillside one summers afternoon. He was gazing up at the sun through his eyelids, playing with the light came through his eyelashes, when he began to wonder what it would be like to travel down a light beam.

He lay there in a dream state letting his mind wander freely, imagining himself traveling down a light beam, when suddenly he realized, one almost has to say in a flash, just what it would be like. This realization was the essence of the theory of relativity, and it had come to him not as a logical deduction, but as a creative, intuitive insight, the result of synthetic rather than analytic thinking.

Einstein recognized the intuition and placed a high value on his intuition and wrote: The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you and you dont know how or why.
Analyzing the whole subject intuition, in her beautiful book, The Sixth Sense the author Laurie Nadel assures that one can develop the ability by following easy steps.

The important step to identify and develop intuition will be to meditate regularly.
Meditation activates both the right and left side of the brain.
Sudden flashes and logical thinking both are ensured by meditation.
Yogis visualize pictures through their meditation and foretell what is to happen to individuals.
Indian yogis, through their intuitive power had invented many wonderful inventions for the benefit of humanity as a whole.
Hundreds of incidents reveal their intuitive abilities and the whole humanity see them with wonder.

P.D.Ouspensky, in his book, A New Model of the Universe says, The sage of India knew that the powers of man in all the spheres and provinces of his activity can be greatly increased by means of right training and by accustoming man to control his body, mind, attention, will, emotion and desires. In connection with this, the study of man in ancient India was on a level quite inconceivable to us. The powers which yoga gives are not limited to the strengthening of the capacity of understanding. Yoga increases the creative capacity of man in all spheres and domains of life, gives him the possibility of direct penetration into the mysteries of nature, discloses to him the secret of eternity and the enigmas of existence.

Go Deep in Backbends - Yoga Flexibility & Streching

GO DEEP: BACKBENDS (2 Poses, 10 Minutes)

#3 of 7 - The Secrets of Nutrition & Flexibility

Most yoga students HATE backbends, but desperately want to learn them. The truth is that most yoga teachers also HATE backbends, so often they dont teach them very well or very often.

My backbends used to be really patheticI mean REALLY pathetic.

I went to class every day, asked my teachers for tips, but not much was happening. In full wheel pose (urdhva danurasana), I could only get my head about an inch off the ground, and even that nearly killed me!

Sound familiar?

WHY ARE BACKBENDS SO HARD?
Backbends shouldnt really be called backbends, but instead full body bends because they involved so much more than just your back.

All on its own, your spine has a pretty impressive range of motion, but in order to do a deep backbend, all the muscles and connective tissues that support your spine need to be long and limber.

WHY CANT I BACKBEND DEEPLY?
There are a dozen reasons, honestly, but since I love simplicity, lets focus on the two big areas where people often get stuck: the tops of the legs and the shoulders.

WARNING!
The poses below are super powerful, intense, and potentially dangerous. Read carefully and practice consciously.

HANG MAN (a.k.a whoa!)
This is the simplest, most-powerful shoulder opening stretch Ive ever found. Follow the instructions below carefully.

1 Lie on your belly on the floor
2 Wiggle over to a wall
3 Put the crown of your head against the wall (still lying on your belly)
4 From here, DO NOT move your body forward or backward
5 Reach your hands high up onto the wall (you chest will lift up)
6 Spread your hands apart like Down Dog, drop your head, relax
7 If you dont feel anything, give it a minute!
8 If your hands slip down the wall, walk them up again and relax
9 Stay here for 2-5 minutes TOTALLY RELAXED

Note: DO NOT move closer or further away from the wall doing so stretches a different part of your body.

RECLINING HERO (a.k.a. supta vajrasana)
Everyone I know who has an impressive backbend swears by this posture. Be safe, but if possible, hold this one for a LONG time.

1 Kneel on the floor
2 Knees together, feet apart, sit your bum down between your heals
3 If its too intense at this point, bring your feet together and sit on your heals (skip remaining steps)
4 If your bum is on the floor comfortably, lean back
5 Elbows first, lower your back and head to the floor
6 Grab opposite elbows over your head
7 Relax totally for 2-5 minutes

Note: If its too intense to lie back and practice it sitting upright. When you lie back, if your knees start screaming, back off and take it slow! People hurt their knees in this pose every day, so dont be a cowboy. Take it slow and take it easy.
Thanks for reading!

Keep practicing,

Take a Yoga Class - Five Solid Benefits You Can Experience from Yoga

You hear so much about Yoga these days, and there are so many Yoga styles to choose from, that it is advisable to research a particular Yoga style which suits your needs. Some Yoga classes are gentle, athletic, cerebral, religious, meditative, or hot.

Therefore, research the style of Yoga which attracts you most. Then visit a local Yoga studio, or wellness center, for further information. If you have any concerns, you could set up an appointment with a potential Yoga teacher, and share your thoughts about your specific needs.

There are many benefits you can expect from regularly attending Yoga classes, but the five of the most common benefits of Yoga are listed below. Choose a Yoga teacher who fits your needs and do not be pressured into taking a Yoga class that does not suit your lifestyle.

Reduce Stress through the practice of Yoga. This is a universal benefit of all styles of Yoga. If you have stress, when you walk into a Yoga class, you will have much less when you leave.

Some Yoga schools use a variety of methods to purge stress from the body, but the most common are Pranayama (breath techniques), Asana (posture), Mantra (sound), Meditation, and Relaxation Techniques. After a few classes, you will know what works and what does not.

Positive Thinking is a by product of every Yoga class and style, with the rare exception of a dogmatic Yoga teacher. If you discover you are in the midst of a drill sergeant, disguised as a Yoga teacher, you have to make a decision based on your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Consider this: If you feel negative after listening to your Yoga teacher, you should leave. You may find another Yoga teacher in the same facility, or at another Yoga center, but do not put up with abuse.

Sleeping Better is a result of the first two, above-mentioned, Yoga benefits. For the most part, the physical styles of Yoga release muscle tension through Asana and Pranayama. The less physical styles may focus on Mantra, Meditation, and Relaxation Techniques.

Relief from Back Pain is a by product of the physical styles, but choose carefully. The more gentle Hatha Yoga sub-styles such as Restorative, Gentle, and Therapeutic Yoga, cater to students with a variety of ailments, including back pain.

Increased Muscle Tone is also a result of the physical styles of Yoga. If you are searching for a Hatha Yoga teacher, studio, or style, choose one that caters to your physical condition. Do not jump into a physically vigorous Yoga class, unless you are physically active. Most injuries, in the physical forms of Yoga occur, when students push themselves too far.

Lastly, have fun trying different Yoga classes, until you find the right one for you, and never force yourself into a Yoga posture. Your best Yoga teachers are your body and mind. Listen to them, avoid pain, be safe, and you will be enjoying the benefits of Yoga for years to come.

Yoga: Three Reasons You Should Not Do Yoga Posture - Camel

The Camel (Ushtrasana)

Ushtrasana in a Sanskrit language means a camel, hence the name. The Camel is an advanced and powerful yoga posture, which should be only practiced by intermediate and advanced students in a full version. It opens up the whole front of the body and stimulates the respiratory, circulatory, nervous and endocrine systems.

The Camel is a posture that should be done after the body is warmed up sufficiently as it provides a quite deep backbend. The posture is a transition between the simpler prone backbend, the Bow pose (Dhanuranasa) and the more challenging backbend, the Wheel (Chakrasana).

After completing the Camel posture, always release the lower back by going into the counter pose, the Childs pose (Shashankasana) and stay there for a while.

The Camel is very beneficial for the digestive and reproductive systems. It stretches the stomach and intestines. This difficult backward bend loosens up the vertebrae and stimulates the spinal nerves, relieving rounded shoulders.

It stretches the spine, back muscles, shoulders and arms. It improves flexibility of the spine and improves posture. It opens the throat as it strengthens the neck muscles and increases blood flow to the brain.

It is a good workout for the ankles, thighs and groins, and it helps to tone the calf, neck and abdominal muscles.

The Camel has many benefits for the practitioner; however, in some health conditions this posture should not be practiced.

Three important reasons (out of many) not to do yoga posture Camel:

1) Anyone with recent or chronic knee or neck injury should not do this posture.

2) If you are suffering from lumbago (mild to severe pain or discomfort in the area of the lower back. The pain can be acute or chronic if it has lasted more than three months), avoid this yoga posture.

3) In case of hernia do not attempt this posture.

Caution: Always check with your doctor if you have any doubts or concerns regarding the suitability of this pose for you. The reader of this article should exercise all precautions before deciding to attempt this posture and the responsibility lies solely with the reader and not with the site or the writer.

Yoga Instructor Certification Courses: How Important is a 200 Hour Certification for Yoga Teachers?

When choosing a Yoga instructor program, you have to determine what it is that you want to get out of it. Do you want a comprehensive Yoga instructors course or a quick Yoga instructor diploma to teach Yoga classes?

Are you looking for continuing education credits for the Yoga Alliance -The Yoga Register, British Wheel of Yoga, The International Yoga Federation, or another registry of Yoga teachers? Do you want to enhance your knowledge and teach Yoga to your friends?

It is really all about evaluating what your primary motive is to teach Yoga. You should be aware that many places, which hire Yoga instructors, are requiring a Yoga teachers diploma from a 200 hour certification course.

The Yoga 200 hour certification for Yoga instructor training has become a bare minimum standard for teaching Yoga. What is the reason for this? In a nutshell, it is liability. Liability has become a potential issue in every field, including fitness, weight loss, health, wellness, and Yoga.

Therefore, a Yoga teachers diploma from a 200 hour certification course; would be a prudent first step. A liability insurance policy for Yoga instructors would also be a wise precaution. Injuries in Yoga class are very rare.

However, injuries can occur when a Yoga student has been inactive and develops the impulse to jump into a vigorous Yoga class. Yoga instructors should speak with potential students prior to their participation in a first class.

In this way, Yoga teachers will be aware of pre-existing conditions, within their students. Yoga teachers should establish communication at the initial meeting with any potential Yoga student. If a Yoga instructor course does not cover communication, contraindications, modifications, and some assisting, what good is it?

This is why a Yoga instructors diploma from a 200 hour certification course has become the minimum International hiring requirement for Yoga studios. Regardless of how you choose your certification course, for teacher training in Yoga, you want to be prepared for a variety of circumstances.

Hatha Yoga certification home study has become popular with many interns, who have family and work obligations. Some interns have expenses at home and do not have the luxury of $10,000 in spare cash to spend on a certification for teaching Yoga.

This is fine, but make sure the course is a 200 Hour Certification for Yoga teachers, and you will receive a diploma to teach upon successful graduation.

There are continuing education certificates for Yoga instructors, which are for short courses. These make beautiful wall paper, for established Yoga teachers, but these are not Level 1 Yoga instructor certifications, which should state that you participated in a minimum 200 hour program.

Yoga Benefits For All

Yoga is considered an art that helps with the development of your spirit, mind, and body. If you continue practicing yoga over a period of time, it will give you the contentment you have been searching for. Yoga is achieved through exercise, breathing, and meditation.

Practicing yoga helps to improve many body systems such as circulatory, digestive, skeletal, metabolic, respiratory, muscular, nervous, and lymphatic. Yoga also helps to stabilize your emotions and keep your mind clear. It not only focuses on your physical being, but also your mental and spiritual growth.

You do not have to be a certain age to practice yoga. Yoga can be practiced by anyone, but is most beneficial to people 30 years and older. Yoga gives you the energy you need for a healthier and more vigorous future.

To be successful at yoga, you must perform the exercises on a regular basis, start out slowly, and most of all stick with it. Yoga is best practiced under the guidance of a certified teacher. The instructor can correct you if you are not performing the poses to gain maximum benefit and he or she can also help you work out at the right pace.

When practicing yoga, be sure to dress comfortably. Many yoga students prefer to go barefoot. A typical yoga outfit consists of leotards or a body stocking. You can find these outfits in a variety of colors at your local sports store.

For indoor exercises, find a comfortable room in your home. If you are doing your workout on a carpeted floor, you will not need equipment, even though some people prefer to use a mat.

Types of Yoga

Today there are many types and styles of yoga. You may find a style you prefer from the two listed below.

Hatha yoga (”Ha” meaning sun and “Tha” meaning moon) is the yoga type better known in the west. This style is preferred among new yoga students. With so many benefits including simple poses and the option to perform at your own pace, Hatha is just what you need to help you relax at the end of a hectic day. In addition, Hatha yoga is a great means for clearing your mind and giving you a longer, healthier life.

Kundalini yoga, introduced to the West in 1969, is fairly new to the United States. This type of yoga focuses on healing and cleansing the mind and body. It involves poses, breathing, chanting, and meditation. Kundalini yoga also releases energy at the base of the spine and draws it up through the body. This energy is often referred to as a snake coiled up at the end of the spine.

Beyond the physical benefits, Kundalini yoga is considered one of the most spiritual types of yoga exercise. Individuals who are truly devoted to this type often wear white robes and head wraps.

Thai Yoga Massage

Besides using yoga as an exercise, did you know that this ancient practice can also be used in massage? The origin of Thai Yoga Massage can be traced back thousands of years to India and the spread of Buddhism.

The Thai Yoga Massage consists of gentle movements given by the therapist with the hands, feet, knees, and legs, along with a massage that releases the energy and helps it to flow freely. This free-flow of energy helps to relieve back pain, menstrual pain, headaches, stress. Also, this oriental massage increases energy and improves circulation. Both the giver and receiver are blessed by this massage and each one reaps the benefits.

Yoga as a Healing Tool: Reiki Energy

Many students today who are interested in yoga may have heard of Reiki energy healing or medicine. The word Reiki means Universal Life Force Energy. It is a form of healing through the use of natural forces, given the name Chi by ancient Chinese mystics. This form of yoga is known as a hands-on art. Practitioners use the laying of the hands as well as gestures in the air to channel the energy. Reiki brings back and balances the energy in your body.

Experts normally agree that Reiki is very simple to use and can be learned easily. In order for the life force energy to work, the recipient has to be willing to accept change and turn away from their old habits. Such is the case in most healing methods.

Which Yoga Practice is Right for You?

Whether you want to participate in yoga, have a massage, or try energy healing, remember it is your decision. Everyone is different and you must decide for yourself. If you are still hesitant, do some research online or check with your local yoga instructor to find more answers.
